IMPERMANENCE
Lizzie merges abstraction with representation in this collaboration of paintings and ceramics.
Investigating mark-making in both paint and clay led her to explore the figurative subject, the flower, in a more abstract gesture. The 6 canvases, 3 framed paper works and 8 ceramic vessels, all focus on the glowing impermanence of the petals, yet always referencing the bold and delicate anthem, she is so drawn to. And still the loose floral forms, this body of work is more vibrant of colour and movement and texture, particularly in the vessels.
“I had wanted to speak to the blooms in the form of hand-built ceramics and this series seemed an ideal opportunity to revive my interest in clay”, Lizzie says.
“I’m finding the beauty in their imperfection and impermanence really, and the innocence and generosity in their structure”
“The progression of buckets of Magnolia and Daffodils, Ranunculus and Tulips, Roses and more Roses, adorning her studio in Hawke’s Bay, is quite delicious. Their fragile, soft bodies, loose and unfolding, majestically intertwining and finally resting. All strength. All resilience, until their final decay. Their final bow.”
“I am constantly captured by their anthem of imperfection and impermanence”, she says. “I’m often reflecting on the meaningful, wise and often quiet measure of these natural forms. The lessons, through the often messy tapestry of their coming and going. Their resilience, every year.”
